In early December 2020, the Bishops of Scotland sent out a pastoral letter to encourage people during the time of pandemic, especially after months of restrictions, hardships and worries, illness and death. With the dark days of the Scottish winter upon us, these can seem like dark times altogether. However, as we approach the great celebration of Christmas, we remember that God came into our dark world to be a light, to being us healing, hope and salvation.

So, the bishops encourage us to persevere and to take heart in our faith and in the possibilities afforded by the work of diligent scientists and medical practitioners who are working so hard to offer us practical hope and the possibility of a vaccine in the new year. The bishops also address some of the ethical concerns Catholics have raised about such vaccines and the research methods used to develop them.
